THE TOP MANAGERS OF GOOGLE, BOOKING.COM AND EXPEDIA: "BE EQUIPPED TO FACE THE NEW CHALLENGES OF THE DIGITAL WORLD."

MORE AND MORE VOICE SERVICES IN THE FUTURE
Investing more and more on digital technologies and artificial intelligence, being ready not only to give the right answer at the right time but - in the future - to anticipate the needs of the client, who has become increasingly curious, demanding and impatient: this is the mantra and the challenge coming from the Digital Leaders, the top managers of Google, Booking.com and Expedia, who this attended the Innovation Arena at TTG Travel Experience, one of the most awaited events in the ambitious program organized by IEG Think Future. Interviewed by Giancarlo Carniani, Italian Analyst for PhocusWright, and Mirco Lalli, founder of Travel Appeal, Furio Gianforme Travel Industry Head of Google, followed by Walter Lo Faro, country manager of Expedia and Alberto Yates, Regional Manager Italia of Booking.com all offered insight. “Mobile technologies have enormously changed the needs of the consumer, and will do so again with an even greater impact in the next five years” is what the top manager of Google said in a nutshell.
In the Travel sector, digital development is very strong on a global scale. The advice given to those operating in the sector is: equip yourselves, and do it now. The big names of the digital world are already doing so, for example, by investing more in Voice technology, as well as in Chatbots (simulated conversation through web messages). “In the future, keyboards will probably no longer exist - Lo Faro observed  - people will simply talk using various devices”. The important thing is to get there prepared.

POLIMI STUDY: THE DIGITAL TOURISM MARKET IS IN CONSTANT GROWTH. NOW WORTH 14.2 billion (+8%), A QUARTER OF THE OVERALL VALUE
The digital tourism market in Italy continues to grow, reaching a quarter of the total value. The new study of the Observatory for digital innovation in tourism at the Milan Polytechnic presented at TTG Travel Experience finds, in terms of purchases and reservations, that the digital market is now worth 14.2 billion, with a  growth of the 8% compared to 2017: 24% of the Travel market in Italy (58.3 billion euros the overall value).

The driving forces behind the digital market are transports (61%), followed by housing (29%) and vacation packages (10 %%). The market share of OTAs (Online Travel Agencies) is now 29% (+ 14%). “The digital component of the market also grows thanks to the 'traditional' actors in the supply chain, such as accommodation facilities, agencies, specific tour operators, support mobility services, various services in destination” says Filippo Renga, Director of the Observatory for digital innovation in tourism at the Milan Polytechnic. For example, in the hospitality sector, direct bookings through digital channels (sites, apps, etc.) have grown by 13% and represent 11% of the total bookings received from structures.

Regarding the market’s housing component, the impact of the sharing economy (and more generally of all the peer-to-peer platforms created to facilitate renting and sharing accommodation between individuals) now exceeds 30%". Setting a number of bookings equal to 100 in hospitality structures in 2018, on average 46 of these are carried out directly by the final customer (20 through an email and 11 via website, app and social network) while 36 through OTA or Home sharing portals. 15% of bookings are carried out by telephone or over the counter.
