Hotel chains voice interest in Myanmar

Speaking at the World Economic Forum in Davos last week, Arne Sorenson, President and Chief Executive Chairman of Marriott International said; “Marriott would love to be there if the conditions are right… Burma has captured people's imagination for decades.”

Quoted by Mizzima News, Vice Chairman and Chief Financial Officer of Starwood, Vasant Prabhu, said; “I think it’s time for people like us to look at Burma.”

Tourism infrastructure is extremely limited in the country and tourism stakeholders, who have voiced concerns over constraints to growth, will welcome the intent. Yet there are major hurdles still standing in the way, and these companies will unlikely do business in Myanmar before European and American trade sanctions are lifted.
