Happiest People in the World

Jun 16, 2008

Denmark is the happiest country in the world! A scientific survey of international happiness carried out by Leicester University in England shows that the small kingdom of Denmark is home to the happiest people in the world.

If you want to visit a magic kingdom and soak in the atmosphere of the happiest place on Earth, you might want to schedule your summer vacation accordingly.

“Over the past 30 years, in survey after survey, this nation of five and a half million people, the land that produced Hans Christian Andersen, the people who consume herring by the ton, consistently beat the rest of the world in the happiness stakes,” said correspondent Morley Safer in a Feb. 17 CBS News 60 Minutes story highlighting Denmark. ABC News 20/20 also reported on the phenomena, saying the Danes feel "tryghed" – the Danish word for "tucked in" – like a snug child.

Travelers visiting Denmark this summer will find themselves in a state of happiness and bliss, a pleasant condition the Danes call “hygge” (pronounced “hooga”).
